Fright Night remake - Frightful or not?

The frightful night has arrived. The night we watch the remake of cheesy, but much beloved “Fright Night”. Does it slowly suck the life out of us over the course of an hour and a half or does it shine some light on the flaming wish that remakes would actually be good?

We know the story well. Vampire moves in, neighbor sees suspicious behavior and hilarity ensues. OK, so not hilarity, but bloody vampire cat and mouse games.

Jerry (Collin Farrell) moves in next door to Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin), a somewhat nerdy kid who is becoming slightly cooler in school by way of his girlfriend Amy (Imogen Poots). When Charlie’s friend Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) goes missing after a supposed vampire hunt Charlie starts to see the evidence that Jerry may actually be a vampire. Logically, Charlie seeks the help of an illusionist who uses vampires in his acts, Peter Vincent (David Tennant), and the hunt is on… sorta.

The story is well thought out and plays with some new ideas on how a vampire might get passed that requirement of being invited into a home and how a high school kid might actually find a way to kill a said vampire in a unique way. The story is just enough like the original to make a connection, but does enough of its own thing to stand on its own. Was it a needed remake? No, but it was welcome in that it entertains and has the right mix of non-Twilight vampires, humor and action.

Performances all work well. The cast is definitely fit for the characters, each acting to their strengths and not really overdoing it. Farrell makes a cool vampire even though his transformations aren’t as inspired as we hope they’d be. David Tennant is charismatic and Anton Yelchin plays the lead very well. The weakest link here is probably Christopher Mintz-Plasse and only because his shtick is getting old.

It can be said that we aren’t bitter that this movie was made. It entertained, didn’t insult the new or old fans and didn’t suck the life out of us. Plus, they won us over when poked fun of “Twilight”.

The one sad thing is that there was no "Dr. Mabuse" song in this one. Heck, not even a cover. More about Dr. Mabuse's song can be read at ThatOneSongFrom.com.
