Christopher Nolan proves again why he’s among Hollywood’s elite. After the phenomenon of “The Dark Knight,” this intrepid filmmaker had his work cut out for him: to deliver another spellbinding winner. Rather than jumping immediately into a third Batman, Nolan got his original story “Inception” green-lighted by Warner Bros.

“Inception” has corporate spies floating in mid-air, subconscious-created antagonists and a city that collapses onto itself. If you and I pitched this script, we would get the “don’t call us, we’ll call you” brush-off. But then again, none of us has a billion-dollar blockbuster to Power Point our spiel. To Bitter Balcony’s pleasure, Nolan is in top form; taking the dream battlefield of “The Matrix” and fusing it with the high-risk intrigue of “Mission Impossible.”

A group of rouge dream infiltrators led by “extractor” Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) and point man Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) specialize in stealing ideas from the mind in the dirty and obscure corporate wars. The heist men are persuaded by the powerful Saito (Ken Watanabe) to execute inconceivable task of Inception: implanting an idea into young financial heir's brain named Fischer(Cillian Murphy) that can bring his dying father’s juggernaut enterprise down. Cobb assembles a team featuring an alchemist/coordinator Yusuf (Dileep Rao); master of disguise Eames (Tom Hardy); and a young reverie architect Ariadne(Ellen Page) who is recruited to design the maze in Fischer’s dangerous subconscious. The biggest threat, however, is the volatile Mal(Marion Cottiard), a “projection” of Cobb’s past who wants to pull him down with her into the depths of his memories - which could doom the team's mission and lives.

“Inception” is a twisted and thought-provoking spy/sci-fi hybrid. Nolan, like his hero Cobb, rounds up a creative team of familiar contributors (director of photography Wally Pfister, composer Hans Zimmer, editor Lee Smith, and acting talents Murphy, Watanabe, and Michael Caine as Cobb’s Father). They manage to pull off yet another summertime smash. Nolan gets solid performances from DiCaprio and the rest of the cast. “Inception” is a good showcase for Tom Hardy, who will take over for the very crazy Mel Gibson in a new “Mad Max” film.

However, the true star here is Nolan himself. While Nolan’s filmmaking ambitions seem to grow in every new production, the one theme that connects all his movies is the examination of the lingering effects of loss and regret in memories. Whether it is a tattooed amnesiac, a billionaire moonlighting as a giant bat, or embittered rival magicians, Nolan delves into the overbearing guilt that haunts, and ultimately defines, his protagonists. With “Inception,” Nolan finally gets to go inside the layers of the mind and show how turbulent and ambiguous it can get in there. A second viewing is a must!
