This year MIFFF made it a habit to replay the trailers for their upcoming features before every block. The first time I saw the trailer for "The Selling" I thought it was going to be a fun campy movie until I saw the end of the trailer that gave me pause and made me think this film might actually know what angles to play to be a good comedy. The next half-dozen times I saw the trailer I found the ending made me laugh just the same as the first time, so once again I thought it might be better than just a campy romp. Sure enough it did and it was. Needless to say "The Selling" sold us right from the start of the film and satisfied through to the closing. Thankfully, there is no mortgage left and we can share the joys of ownership of these memories.

"The Selling" is about Richard Scarry (like the children’s book author) and his friend, Dave Ross, who purchase a house with the intention of flipping it. Scarry needs it for his mother’s chemotherapy. The deal they get is great until they find out that several ghosts haunt the house. The ghosts just want them to, as they frequently and do some comedic delight, get out. Having no choice but to sell the house because of the investment they can't afford to loose out on they strive forward, fight, plead and beg the ghosts to cooperate because one way or another they will sell the house.

Gabriel Diani is a great choice to star in this film. He shows an aptitude when it comes to showing strength against the ghosts when he needs to and yet he screams like a teenage girl when the situation is right. His character is easy to connect with and his comic sidekick, Jonathan Klein, compliments the film and the performance well. All the actors add something unique to each of their characters and are a joy to watch whilst mixed up in this crazy situation.

The films direction (Emily Lou) is solid with some great shot selection and comedic timing of it's own. The direction compliments the solid screenplay (also Gabriel Daini) that keeps you from getting bored, too scared and delivers on all the laughs you'd hope from a horror/comedy with such a great premise. The characters are all written with a certain comedic strength in mind and everything flows naturally.

From what we heard at MIFFF the movie should be out on DVD in about six months and on demand a short time before that. If you like horror, a good belly laugh, or best of all both, you owe it to yourself to check this film out when it becomes available. Check out the movie's website for possible festival showings near you.

Fun side note:
Here is a pic of the director being interviewed at MIFFF from our twitter stream here (not a great shot, but eh).
