JAS's Top, er something, of 2010!

Bitter, Bitter Balcony, Movie Review,

This won't be a top ten or even a top five because while there were some good films last year not too many were worthy of "Top films of 2010".

A Serbian Film
While hard to recommend because of the topics explored in this film it was the best film of 2010, as far as I'm concerned. It was one of the only films to stick in my head for quite a long time due to it's direction, storytelling and the performances of the cast. Truly a well made film and if you think you can look past the more extreme scenes then it's a must watch.

The Horde (non-dubbed version)
This movie tripped me out. A zombie movie of terrific proportions that starts off intriguing and grabs hold of your interest like a pit bull with lockjaw and doesn't let go. I'll also mention that this could be the first film that made me stand from my chair and cheer for one of the characters in the end. Not because they escape or survive, but because two of the characters have some great exits.

Tron Legacy
There are few films that got the reaction from me that this film did. I caught this twice in the theater and had goose bumps two-thirds of the film. Complain about the story or whatever, but don't deny that this film is an 'Aesthetic Masterpiece'. The combination of awesome score by Daft Punk and visual beauty really does make this a great film to watch on the silver screen.

The Presence
I caught this film at MIFFF along with "A Serbian Film" and I still don't get how my head didn't blow up from the awesome. "The Presence" is an original take on the age-old ghost story with interesting twists, beautiful photography and a great vibe. It should be available for mass consumption sometime this year. Naturally, I plan on watching it again.

Honorable Mention:
While not amazing pieces of cinema I did get a kick out of "Kick Ass" and my opinion versus the world because I actually had a great time watching "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World".

uh, I would replace the Tron Legacy with Kick Ass... not that psyched for Tron, even though I watched it in 3D, IMAX.

I don't know what it is about that film, but I dig it. Is the story flawless? No. Is the acting brilliant? It's good, but not brilliant. Something about it nerds me the hell out though. And I really do think it's an aesthetic masterpiece. Try to compare the style to anything else. It almost doesn't even compare to the original, in good ways.
